Remedies for Wine Stains

Hey, accidents happen! Sometimes those accidents come in the form of spilled wine. Red wine is a notoriously dreaded stain. It's bright in color and can be difficult to completely remove all the leftover pigment on your carpet. If your carpet has been the victim of a wine spill, there are some ways to successfully remove them. Here’s how.

Act Fast!

One of the most important things to remember when it comes to wine stains is that time is of the essence. It is more than likely that when a glass of wine is spilled, there will be people around to notice it. This allows you to take swift action to control the stain. Remember to blot the stain with a clean, white towel. Never rub it in! A fresh stain will always be easier to remove than one that is set and dry.

Break Out the Salt

After you have blotted most of the liquid from the carpet, let salt handle the rest. Just dump a generous amount of table salt on the spill. The salt will draw the excess liquid out from the carpet fibers. You will notice that the pile is working as it turns from white to pink. Ideally, leave the salt to do its job overnight. Then, the next morning simply vacuum it all away.

Raid the First Aid Kit

Another effective stain remover can be found in your first aid kit. Great for more than just sterilizing cuts, hydrogen peroxide is amazing at lifting color from stains. It is great at lifting color altogether, so this solution will only work for lighter carpets as hydrogen peroxide can bleach darker carpets. To utilize peroxide for wine stains, soak a white cloth in 3 percent peroxide. Then, dab it onto the affected area. Allow the peroxide to sit on the stain for a few minutes and then blot it away with another clean towel.
