Signs You Might Have Carpet Beetles

Have you noticed balding spots in your carpet? Not only is this an eyesore, but it could also be one of the first signs of an even worse problem. An even grosser problem. It could be a sign of carpet beetles.

If you do happen to have carpet beetles, however, we want you to be aware of what to look for and how to get rid of them, so that you can salvage your remaining carpet from their hungry appetites.

Bare Areas on Carpets and Rugs

As was noted before, one of the first things that may tick you off to the presence of carpet beetles may be bald spots on area rugs or on your carpet. These little bugs get their moniker from their affinity for munching on carpet fibers along with other types of clothing fibers. The larvae of these beetles are typically hidden in dark and concealed areas. Most people do not notice them given how small they are. However, if you have a rug suffering from these symptoms, give the under side a peek. You may be able to catch a glimpse of them there.

Damaged Wool Blankets or Clothing

Carpet beetles feed on all sorts of fibers, not just carpet. Wool products are also on the menu. These types of items are especially tempting if they have been soiled on and then stored without cleaning.

Shed Exoskeletons

As these beetles grow, they shed their skins. Take note of the little spaces in your home where pet hairs, dead insects, and other debris tends to collect unnoticed. This is likely a spot where you will find the shed skins of these beetles.

Check Windowsills and Walls

Come spring, adult beetles trapped in your house will be trying to make their way outdoors in order to mate. Since the light coming from your windows will serve as a beacon for them, look for tiny dead beetles lying on your windowsill. It is also likely that during this active stage for them, that you will be able to notice them climbing up your walls. Even as adults, they are quite small. If you see black dots on your walls, further inspect them with a magnifying glass.

If you are able to confirm that you have these little freeloaders, do not worry! They are actually rather common. Perhaps try bumping up your vacuuming and strive to really get into those hidden corners. Since these beetles also feed on crumbs or stored food, be careful not to let fallen crumbs and things to sit on your carpet too long. It may also be wise to hire a professional carpet cleaner to properly work out debris from deep in your carpets.
