How to Remove Older Stains

Obviously, for your best chance at successfully removing a stain, you should address it sooner rather than later. Ideally, right when it happens. But you do not always notice a stain right away. Maybe you have kids or a dog that did it. Even if this is the case, all is not lost. Here are some tips on how to remove an older stain.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Oftentimes, inexpensive, simple household items can get the job done. For example, hydrogen peroxide. Most bottles of hydrogen peroxide that are sold are already diluted. To use it all you need to do is place it in a spray bottle and saturate the spot. Allow it to dwell on the surface for 10-15 minutes. When it is through sitting, you can go in with a stiff brush and scrub at the stain. This will loosen up dirt, debris, and whatever caused the stain, as well as work the peroxide further into the fibers. Finally, you can use a towel to blot the area dry.

White Wine

Red wine is a common carpet stain culprit. If you have a red wine spill that has already dried, you can pour a little white wine over top to reactivate it. From there you can attempt to blot it out. Try to avoid scrubbing so as not to drive the stain deeper into the carpet fibers. You can add more wine and blot in repetition until the stain has been lifted, or at least majorly faded.

Patching

If you have tried multiple different ways to lift an older stain with no luck, there is still one thing you can do. You can remove the stubborn stain by cutting that piece of carpet away and replacing it with a new piece of carpet. This is rightly called carpet patching. Many times, people will have leftover carpet stored away from the original job, which would be an ideal place to select your patch from. But even if you do not have that or maybe you live in an apartment, you can take a patch from an inconspicuous part of the home. Such as the back of a closet.
