Household Items that Double as Carpet Cleaners

Household Items that Double as Carpet Cleaners

The only way to avoid stains on carpet is to not live around carpet at all. Of course, this is not reasonable! Carpet is plush, warm, and inviting, which is why it is so popular in homes today. But you do not have to live with stains on your carpet. In fact, there are items that you probably already have at home that can help you get rid of the stains on your carpet. Here are a couple of effective solutions to try if you don’t feel like running out to grab a carpet stain remover.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is famously great at absorbing odors. If you are dealing with a pet accident related stain, the smell it can leave behind is the most unappealing aspect. To combat this, grab your trusty box of baking soda and sprinkle it over the affected area. Let it sit for an hour or overnight. The longer it is allowed to dwell on the spot, the more odor it will absorb. Vacuum the baking soda up after it has been allowed to sit for the desired amount of time.

Vinegar

In order to combat odor and discoloration, vinegar is your best friend. Mix equal part water and vinegar into a spray bottle and saturate the problem area. Dab the solution away with a clean paper towel or cloth. The vinegar smell will linger for a brief period but will soon dissipate, along with any other offensive odors.

Acetone

Have you ever clumsily spilled a bottle of nail polish on your carpet? No need to fret. Nail polish remover can save the day. A dye free acetone is key since you do not want to cause more stains to appear. Test a small inconspicuous portion of carpet first. Once you are sure that the acetone and your carpet are compatible, soak a cotton ball in the nail polish remover. Then dab the cotton ball over the spilled nail polish. Repeat the process until all the polish is lifted.
